Class,

It is important to have a good understanding of our national and global public health organizations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is the foremost public health agency of the U.S. federal government operating 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. The CDC has many responsibilities to protect our national and global health, and its mission is to protect the nation’s health, safety, and security from threats within and from outside the U.S. (CDC, 2014).

The World Health Organization (WHO) is an agency of the United Nations that is considered to be the “global guardian of public health” (WHO, 2016). The role of the WHO is global health security which includes proactive and reactive activities that reduce the vulnerability of populations to potential regional and international health threats. Health threats can include disease outbreaks, malnutrition, bioterrorism, harmful environments or climates, and any disease that is emerging, epidemic, endemic, or pandemic (WHO, 2017) (GCU, 2018).

It is comforting to me to know that national and global threats to health are monitored by these agencies. Would you agree?
