Philosophy Research Assignment

Now that you have learned a little bit about the ancient philosophers, let’s look at some of the philosophical movements that have shaped our society.

For this assignment, you will choose a philosophical movement from the list below and research the following:

Historical Context

This should specifically look at the world in which this philosophy came to be. What was happening in the area where this philosophy was developed? What events or beliefs might have influenced its creation?

Associated Philosophers

Who was involved with or influenced this philosophical movement? Look for a main player or two and give a short bio of their life as it relates to this movement.

Basic Tenets of Philosophy

What are the basic beliefs of this philosophy as they relate to the questions of what is good and what is real and how should we live? Be sure to include relative quotes and excerpts from the texts to support your information.

Texts

This should be the focus of this assignment. What texts are associated with this philosophy? Find and read from the texts associated with this philosophy, and then choose some excerpts from your readings that are exemplary and include them in your presentation (think of the text I included from Aristotle’s Ethics, or Plato’s Allegory of the Cave).

Influence

How has this philosophy influenced the world in which we now live? Where is it manifested today?

Once you have completed your research, you will script a short 5–7-minute video outlining these topics (in the order above). Your script needs to be in your own words and well organized. It also needs to cite at least three credible, reliable sources, with full MLA bibliographic information provided for these sources at the end of the script.

Your video should include illustrations or graphics. If you aren’t sure how to do this, see one of the many tutorials online for video presentation programs (Windows Movies, Adobe, PowToon, PowerPoint, etc.) Here is a list of some available programs, although you can use any program you are comfortable with.

When you are done, upload your script and video here for grading.
